Nigerian Mental Health Practitioners USA, Inc.
The Nigerian Mental Health Practitioners USA, Inc. (NMHPUSA) is dedicated to assisting with the improvement of behavioral and mental health care in Nigeria. What makes the NMHPUSA unique is that it is, arguably, the first United States-based nonprofit organization, with a 501(c)(3) charity status, to devote its resources to the development of mental health care in Nigeria.
Working with individuals, local organizations and government officials, at federal and state levels in Nigeria, the organization is developing programs that help to address the mental health needs of Nigerians.
Our efforts in Nigeria are through our sister organization, the Nigeria-American Institute for Mental Health (NAIMH) based in Abuja. Currently, we are focused on providing manpower training and mental health medication distribution. The medication distribution program is free of charge. In Nigeria, only a small fraction of the population has access to psychiatric care.
We are making plans to train healthcare workers through our Train-the-Trainer and other programs. These programs aim to build a future where Nigerians can find effective and affordable treatment for mental illness, as easily as they can for physical illnesses.
